The biggest problem with social media is that it makes people think anybody gives a shit about their opinion.
You know those dweebs who are like “I don’t care about my appearance, I shouldn’t have to be trendy, people should just love me for me”? Well, they’re wrong. Just because fashion trends are irrational and arbitrary doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.
Similarly, your opinion about current events or policy choices is not important. If you want to change the world you have to find a leverage point and push on it. Loudly virtue-signaling into the void just reveals your impotence.
“I don’t care that millions and millions of people disagree with me or find my worldview bizarre. They are fascists/commies/idiots/elites/racists/outgroup!” Ok.
If you won’t go to a little bit of effort to make yourself hot to the people you want to date, why should they want to date you? Similarly, if you make it clear that you will not update your beliefs on new information, why should anyone bother to talk to you?
The flip side of this is everyone who has suddenly adopted a new opinion feeling the need to tell us all, as if no one ever had thought of it or talked about it before. People don’t care if you support black lives or are against censorship or whatever. You still have no power.
People aren’t interested in your new JCPenney jeans, and they’re not interested in your basic ass opinions either.
