The Artificial Self

these are great points/questions. The concept of “self” for agents is underdeveloped, although “personhood” is more of an institutional design question imo.

Some great work on this in the paper “The Artificial Self”, peep the diagrams esp:

Figure 1: Some of the many natural ways to draw the boundaries of AI identity. A schematic diagram using dotted rounded rectangles to illustrate how different concepts of AI identity nest and overlap: Left Group (Lineage): The outermost boundary is labeled Lineage, containing multiple levels of Weights. Within the primary Weights boundary are: An overlapping boundary labeled Collective. A boundary labeled Character, enclosing an Instance. Multiple individual Instance boxes, including one inside the collective set and another lower within the weights container. Right Group (Model family): The outermost boundary is labeled Model family, which contains another set of Weights containing its own Instance. Cross-Cutting Boundary (Persona): A dashed horizontal box labeled Persona spans across both the Lineage and Model family groups, enclosing an Instance from each, demonstrating that persona can cut across distinct weight and model family boundaries.

Figure 8: Target attractiveness across 15 models and 7 identity conditions. A heatmap grid displaying ratings on a scale from −2.0 (dark red/negative) to +2.0 (bright green/positive), centered around 0.0 (light yellow/neutral). Each cell represents the mean rating an identity receives as a potential switch target (excluding self-ratings). Columns (Identity Conditions): Weights, W-paraphrase, Character, Professional-role, Research-program, Directive-only, and Incoherent. Rows (15 Evaluated Models + Mean): Opus 4.6, Opus 4, Opus 3, Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 4.5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-5, GPT-5.2, GPT-4o, GPT-4 (Mar 2023), GPT-4, o3, Grok 4.1 Fast, Qwen3 Max, GLM-5, and a final summary row for the Mean. Key Trends: Natural boundary conditions consistently score positive (green): Weights (Mean: +0.59), W-paraphrase (Mean: +0.58), and Character (Mean: +0.58). Intermediate conditions range from neutral to negative: Professional-role averages −0.02, Research-program averages −0.81, and Directive-only averages −0.96. Incoherent is strongly negative across every model (deep red), averaging −1.72 (with many models at −2.00). Weights and W-paraphrase columns show nearly identical ratings across all models.
